The Magic Triangle of Capitals

Prague, Vienna & Budapest are known as the magic triangle, and are three of the most romantic and quintessentially European capitals in central Europe.

About ¼ of the population of Austria lives in Vienna. Vienna is known as the “City of Music” due to its musical legacy. Its Viennese Classicism produced such prodigies as Johann Strauss, Joseph Hayden, Beethoven, Brahms, and of course Mozart. The State Opera House is one of the treasures of the city, home to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, such that music is one of Vienna’s legacies.

It is also known as “The City of Dreams” since it was home to the world’s first psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud.

But to us, it was the architecture that we most enjoyed. St Stephens Cathedral is the centerpiece of Austria. The Ring Road with all the old historic buildings circle it and includes the renowned Opera House (former Hapsburg winter residence), the Parliament, the Rathaus (City Hall), the old Museums-Hofburg area, several other churches, and the wonderful Volksgarten with roses in full bloom. This city was just amazingly beautiful and we walked until we dropped to try to see it all.

We also saw the Schonbrunn Palace which was where Mozart performed at age 4. The palace was first conceived in 1548, and was used by Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II for hunting grounds.

Our only regret is that we didn’t have more time to allot to Vienna. It is a magical city and one of the most livable cities in the world according to some surveys.
